Welcome to ICP Forests

A programme aiming at a comprehensive compilation of information on the condition of forests in Europe and beyond

The International Co-operative Programme on Assessment and Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Forests (ICP Forests) was launched in 1985 under the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution (Air Convention, formerly CLRTAP) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

ICP Forests monitors forest condition at two monitoring intensity levels:

The Level I monitoring is based on 5706 observation plots (as at 2023) on a systematic transnational grid of 16 x 16 km throughout Europe and beyond to gain insight into the geographic and temporal variations in forest condition.

The Level II intensive monitoring comprises 640 plots (as at 2022) in selected forest ecosystems with the aim to clarify cause-effect relationships.

At present 42 countries in Europe and beyond participate in ICP Forests. All data are available upon request.

ICP Forests data used in award-winning short film

The short film “Our Changing Forests” has won an award in the category “Scientists-as-Filmmakers” at the 6th Global Science Film Festival.

"Our Changing Forests" uses ICP Forests data and was made by Ross Shackleton, Kingshuk Kapuri, and Chaitanya Arya. It also features our Chairman Marco Ferretti who explains, among other things, what can be done to help forests adapt to climate change.

Congrats to the “Scientists-as-Filmmakers”!

Registration open: “EANET Online Workshop on the Utilization of Low Cost Sensors for Air Quality Monitoring: Recommendations and Strategies”

Dear ICP Forests Community,

Registration for the “EANET Online Workshop on the Utilization of Low Cost Sensors for Air Quality Monitoring: Recommendations and Strategies” is open. The workshop will take place online on Wednesday 6 November 2024 from 13:00 – 16:45 (UTC+7:00 Bangkok time).

The aim of the workshop is:

  • To share information on technical requirements, data management, and visualization, citizen participation, policy involvement, and business models by preceded projects on LCS monitoring networks in the Asian region
  • To discuss scopes and challenges for establishing a sustainable LCS monitoring network in East Asia and for sharing LCS data and scientific findings to strengthen efforts to improve the regional air quality in East Asia.
  • To consider recommendations on future directions of LCS monitoring in EANET

European forest monitoring: improvements needed - Available on Waldwissen.net

Earlier this year, a group of scientists from our ICP Forests Community discussed the EU proposal for a forest monitoring framework in a position paper published in the journal Forest Ecology and Management (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.foreco.2024.121875).

Based on this article, Stefan Fleck, Arthur Gessler, Marco Ferretti and Michèle Kaennel Dobbertin have produced a short text in German, English and French and made it available on…

ICP Forests members shared their knowledge at the 26th IUFRO World Congress

At the IUFRO in Stockholm, some ICP Forests members presented their research and thus contributed to the international discourse on forests and society towards 2050.

Among others, ICP Forests chaired a thematic session with eight oral and nine poster presentations on trends and implications of nitrogen deposition on forest ecosystem services in a changing climate. The session included presentations focusing on the overall spatial and temporal trends (mainly across Europe) as well as presentations in which researchers focused on specific case studies.

In the oral session, Dr. Arne Verstraeten showed, with the exception of a limited number of plots, a steady but slow decline of the nitrogen deposition across the ICP Forests Level II network in Europe. Dr. Peter Waldner compared the critical limits for nitrate leaching and soil…
